Race Update 2: Competition hots up The latest report at 1700 GMT shows that on corrected time the overall race leader remains Spaniel (Latvia), with Juan de Langara (Spain) moving up into second place and Mir (Russia) in third place. In Class A Mir leads with Capitan Miranda (Uruguay) in second place and Sedov (Russia) in third, all on corrected time. On the water in Class A Mir leads, followed by Pogoria (Poland) and Capitan Miranda a close third place. Leading the combined B, C and D Class on corrected time is Spaniel followed by Juan de Langara and Endeavour making up third position. On the water in this class, Spaniel and Steppe are almost neck and neck with Endeavour slightly further east but very close. These vessels plus Challenger 1 and Challenger 4 (both UK) have now passed Waypoint One off Ushant. (For race calculation purposes, Class B, C and D vessels have been combined and allocated the Class letter B as they race on an equal footing in this event). Light winds all day have made progress difficult for the larger, heavier ships with smaller vessels, such as Spaniel, making the most of the opportunity to put some water between them and the remaining fleet. The communications vessel reports winds amongst the fleet as north westerly 15kts. The next report is due to be posted on this website at around 0800 on Monday 15th September. |
